Innovative products for the powertrain

Camshafts control the inlet and outlet valves of the cylinders in combustion engines. They are thus essential for the faultless functioning of the engine.

Camshafts from thyssenkrupp can be found today in over 100 million vehicles worldwide. Our customers in this segment include virtually every automotive manufacturer in the world.

In addition to camshafts, our development work also focuses on the products in the vicinity of the camshaft. We thus help to optimize costs, fuel consumption, pollutant and noise emissions, complexity, weight and package space.

What makes us special

Exceptional performance

thyssenkrupp camshafts have been proving themselves for 20 years with exceptional performance. The advantage of the thyssenkrupp production process is the frictional and form closure between the cam and the retainer tube. Furthermore, the combination of high-quality cam materials with tube and end cover materials allows cost savings to be achieved, as well as reductions in the production requirements for the finish machining.

Development competence

Assembled camshaft

The use of assembled camshafts facilitates weight reductions of up to 40 percent compared to conventional cast camshafts. In recent years, the production concept has successfully been transferred to the commercial vehicle sector and launched. A number of series production customers are already relying on the advantages of assembled truck camshafts from thyssenkrupp. Additional developments are focused on the reduction of costs, weight and friction through the use of optimized camshaft bearings and camshaft modules.

More variability in the cylinder head

The desire of automotive manufacturers for a wide range of valvetrain strategies can be made a reality with the sliding cam system and variable camshafts from thyssenkrupp. Cylinder deactivation, cam profile switching, or even turbocharger control, can already easily be implemented with minimal additional design work and maximum efficiency to fulfill future legal requirements.

Fit for the future

In recent years, electric mobility will have to be considered a central element of sustainable mobility. Electrical drive systems have been introduced to the market, and in future they will make up a greater part of mobile traction engines, whether in combination with a combustion engine, or in vehicles driven purely by battery power. The rotor shaft is a core component of the electric motor, and is already being produced in series by thyssenkrupp. Further elementary components of the electrical engine are under development, such as rotors and stators.
